This Special Collection is one of the major outputs from Working Group 5: Human Stories for Humane Reactions, of COST Action HIDDEN: History of Identity Documentation in European Nations (CA21120). It was the result of a workshop entitled ‘“Nothing about Us without Us”: Identity Documents and Identity Dilemmas’ held in COST HQ in Brussels in June 2024. The workshop was organized by WG5, and brought together scholars across various disciplines (literature, human rights, law, refugee studies, sociology, teaching, ethics, among others) and stakeholders, including a variety of NGOs and individuals who work closely with people on the move, and/or have themselves lived experience of migration.

The driving motivation behind this Special Collection was to showcase this range of very important voices. The journal Memory, Mind & Media, published Open Access for Cambridge Core (Cambridge University Press), offered an important outlet to make the contributions reach a wider reading public.

As co-leader of WG5, Ana Belén Martínez García led the initiative, asking for expressions of interest in the following months, and was soon joined by colleagues Monika Arnez and Anita Lunić. The three editors launched the Special Collection with an Editorial: “Navigating migration, memory and media: Introduction to the collection” (Martínez García, Arnez and Lunić). This paved the way for scholars from other organizations to submit articles in answer to a broader call for papers beyond HIDDEN. Crucially, all contributors had to engage with the key ideas of memory and migration across media, and creative pieces were also welcome.

The collection now contains 3 research articles and 1 Reflection piece by the Action Chair, Jennifer Redmond, all of them accessible OA so important issues are no longer “hidden”.

As of September 2026, 1 further research article is forthcoming, 2 articles and 1 Dialogue are under review, and 2 articles are being revised by their authors. Once the collection comes to a close, the guest editors will write a closing editorial reflecting on the process and where these themes may lead us in the future.
